How to Replace an audi replacement key G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video, Charles the Humble Mechanic shows how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is located near the transmission's edge over the flywheel gear. It sends a message to the ECU through an uncolored wire T55/49, then to the tachometer located on the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is situated on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel ring. The sensor sends an electrical signal through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then uses this information to control the flow of fuel, timig and boost. It also sends a signal to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to correlate with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu has to be aware of when the crankshaft has reached TDC and also the location of the camshaft to trigger the spark and injectors.

Saab-logo.jpgIf this sensor fails when it fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error code. This means that the Crank Shaft is out of alignment with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of a chain stretch or a jump in the chain link of the upper timing chain. However the code will not be displayed on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

Testing can be a bit difficult since there are two pins replacement key for audi a3 the connector and they have different functions however the best method to test it is to measure resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read around 1000 ohms when the sensor is at full operation. Look for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay if you are experiencing issues with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating at full speed from the highway paytoll, I experienced massive power loss like the engine is running out of gas or the injectors aren't firing anymore. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning and found that 3 were soaked in gasoline, and the fourth was unclean. When i crank the engine without sparks, I put a piece of tissue on the top of each of the injector holes and the 3 drenched with gazoline pop out, but the 4th stays shut. I inspected the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55, 30/55 and 48/55. i get zero Ohm. So i assume the problem is in another place.

I also tried to reset PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it is running fine with the G28 connected. However the intermittent misfire issue still occurs at higher RPM. The coolant temperature sensor (G62) shows the wrong temperature value of -49c even when i unplug it. Also i noticed that the oil pressure gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar, whereas the actual pressure is 0.0 if i crank up the engine.

I'm not sure what to do, but i believe that i've ruled out everything else. But i am afraid I might have missed something. Let me know if you have any ideas! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The GM-style transmitter functions similarly to the G4 sender and works on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily locate the spare in a salvage shop or a parts store. Testing them is easy by putting your DMM in resistance mode and measure between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's side up) and 2 (2nd from left on the black end of the connector). They should be infinite ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B, AAN, ABY and ADU) engines have an ECU that has to be aware of the speed and position of the crankshaft to make decisions about timing of the fuel injectors, etc. It uses a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to accomplish this. If either of these go bad you will get codes on the diagnostic scanner which can lead to engine shutdown.

The signs of a failed G28 sensor include an inaccurate gearbox rev counter and gears that shift faster than normal, and/or a misfire when in gear. If you experience any of these problems, it is likely that your sensor is going bad and needs replacing. The good news is that they are quite affordable and easily accessible particularly in the case of a Bosch sensor, which is what we have. If you prefer, GM's version of this part would be a good option.

5. Tachometer

A faulty engine speed sensor could be the reason behind numerous issues in your vehicle. You can check for sensor failure by examining the continuity of the sensor to the tachometer. Additionally, you can verify continuity between pin T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79trace [79]), and between pin T6a/1 as well as pin T26a/12. It should show around 1000 ohms of resistance between those two pins.
